United Academics of the University of Oregon (UA), the exclusive union representative of the faculty at the University of Oregon (UO), asks allies to join in urging the university administration to conclude the bargaining process quickly and equitably.
With four scheduled bargaining sessions remaining, the University of Oregon administration has given no substantive discussion, nor made movement, on salary since their initial (evergreen) “but the UO is broke” presentation. Their analysis shows that the UO is not, in fact, broke, though based on the paucity of conversation at the bargaining table they do not appear to have a plan to deal with inflation or market conditions. To make matters worse, they have chosen to actively disinvest in faculty by reducing the share of the budget allotted to faculty compensation in recent years.
For now, the goal is to demonstrate that there is a critical mass of community supporters who think the UO can and should respect and support our faculty through equitable pay so that we may flourish.
UA asks you to sign onto a letter to be delivered to the UO’s President and Board of Trustees to avert months of disruptive uncertainty and a possible faculty strike by making a forceful statement from the community. The goal is to show the administration that a fair contract is coming one way or the other, and it is in everyone’s best interest–including theirs–to avoid needless confusion and dissension and instead allow UA to focus on the jobs we are here to do.
