I'm Bob Liebman, soon-to-be-retired professor of Sociology. In my career, AAUP has been key to my identity and core to my community at PSU. When a Dean refused to honor credit for prior service in my tenure review, AAUP helped me prevail. I felt a strong payback obligation and served on Executive Council, VP for Grievances, VP for Academic Freedom and Shared Governance (AAUP-OR), and on four bargaining teams. It’s been great to see what these negotiations brought: pay equity, continuous contracts, post-tenure review/raises, and investments in faculty, staff, and students. Most important: As an activist in PSU-AAUP, which stood firm for job security, fair compensation, and shared governance, I had a way to hold true to my principles as a member of a public university community. After 31 years, it’s time now for me to pay it forward by joining other retirees in future actions on behalf of AAUP and PSU.
