The 2019/2020 Academic Year has been quite a whirlwind to say the least. Last September, no one would have predicted the state in which we find ourselves now, but here we are, exhausted and dazed. Despite our proverbial bumps and bruises, we should all be very proud of ourselves for the herculean feat of pivoting to remote “everything” that we accomplished this term. We, yet again, demonstrated our unwavering dedication to our students, our professions, and PSU. Adding to the impact of the global pandemic, we also find ourselves in the midst of the most poignant social justice movement in a generation. It’s no wonder we are so mentally, emotionally, and physically drained, yet hopefully cautiously optimistic about what is yet to come. We hope this summer provides you with some time to rest, relax, and revel in the things that matter most… our families, our friends, our community, and ourselves.
As we move into Summer 2020, 9-month employees not eligible for workshare will be off contract beginning June 16th. Some may be working this summer, and some may not. If you will not be on contract this summer (or working on a limited basis), please do try to keep an ear out for information from PSU-AAUP regarding MOAs, bargaining, and any other issues that may arise. Under normal circumstances, attempts are made to not make big decisions over the summer, but due to the fluid nature of our current state of reality, big ticket items may pop up. We will be sending updates, so stay tuned!
On another note, on Thursday, faculty were asked to provide compassion and courtesy to our students regarding grading and finals. Although this is reasonable considering the stress our students are under, our members are also struggling with the protests in the midst of a worldwide pandemic in addition to helping our students manage the end of the term. PSU-AAUP would like to remind you to take care of yourselves also. Of course we have compassion for our students and want to see them all succeed, but please only do what you currently have capacity for.
We know that these challenging times are filled with fraught, but we’re hopeful a better world will rise from the ashes. We wish you a wonderful summer, and know that PSU-AAUP will be here doing its part to make PSU a better place for us all!
