Team Forming: UC Berkeley Labor Center’s “Skills to Win”!

August 08, 2023 / PSU-AAUP

"To rise to the immense challenges ahead, organizations must double down on fundamental organizing skills to build
people power."

In 2024, PSU-AAUP's contract with the Administration will come to its current end date; the entire contract is potentially open to re-negotiation. This will be a tough bargain, there is no doubt, with a lot at stake for faculty, academic professionals, students, and all PSU stakeholders.

The best way to ensure that we sit down at the bargaining table on Day 1 with maximum potential for success is to build our organizing capacity, as well as the organizing capacity of our sister unions on campus.

Beyond that, organizing skills help us address day-to-day challenges and issue-based campaigns, without necessarily having to wait for the bargaining table.

This fall, we have an amazing opportunity to send
a team of 20 people from PSU’s campus unions
to the UC Berkeley Labor Center's "Skills to Win" organizing training!

WHO CAN JOIN THE TEAM?
PSU-AAUP members who are interested in learning how to participate in a campaign to win change on this campus, for a Bright Future for the entire PSU community, and all the people whom our work supports!

WHO WILL BE ON THIS TEAM?
This team of 20 will include PSU-AAUP members and members of the other campus unions: PSUFA (adjunct faculty), GEU (graduate employees), and SEIU (staff). By developing an all campus-unions organizing team, we grow our strength in ways that will produce benefits for everyone and make it more likely we can achieve our Bright Future goals.

WHAT AM I SIGNING UP FOR BEYOND THIS TRAINING?
You're not committing yourself to any particular role by attending this training. That being said, this training will help prepare you to take on any number of PSU-AAUP roles (with varying time commitments, from 1 hour per month to 6 hours per month) in the AY 2023-2024 as we press for positive change at PSU. We anticipate those who complete this training will choose a role that suits them.

WHO IS LEADING THIS TRAINING?

Two amazing labor leaders! Danielle Mahones is a deeply experienced social justice and labor movement leader. And you may already be familiar with Jane McAlevey's social justice and labor organizing work, including her publication No Shortcuts: Organizing for Power in the New Gilded Age.
