A state board rejected steep tuition increases sought by the University of Oregon and Portland State University on Thursday, prompting PSU officials to say, "there are no good options here."
The rebuke came a month after Gov. Kate Brown ordered the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission to "rigorously apply" oversight before approving tuition increases greater than 5 percent. Under state law, the panel is required to sign off on increases past that threshold.
