Scholars Support Graduate Student Workers at University of Michigan
As scholars and members of various academic institutions across the nation and beyond, we stand in solidarity with the Graduate Employees' Organization (GEO) of the University of Michigan. We are writing to express our concerns with the University of Michigan administration’s response to the ongoing strike and its lack of engagement with GEO demands. We join with the many other university constituents who have expressed their support for GEO and concerns over the University’s actions, including residential advisers, dining hall staff, and faculty.
The University of Michigan is one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in the world. As the twin crises of COVID-19 and systemic racism cause turmoil on our own campuses in similar ways, many of us are closely watching the events unfold at Michigan. As academics who share the University of Michigan’s mission of “developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future,” we call on the Administration to lead us all in a new direction towards a more just and equitable future, rather than doubling down on the path that brought us here. In effect, we are asking: What is more important — stopping the strike, or fixing the problems that led to the strike?
