PSU-AAUP is saddened by the death of Professor Tucker Childs. As a member of the Applied Linguistics department, Professor Childs served Portland State in many ways as an engaged faculty member. He was also a dedicated PSU-AAUP member, joining in 1996, and serving in a variety of roles with our union. He served as a member of the PSU-AAUP Executive Council from 2001-2003, as a Unit Representative from 2012-2013 and 2019-2020, and as an Organizing Committee member from 2013-2104. Even as he planned to retire, he remained a steadfast presence for PSU-AAUP. Thank you, Professor Childs, for all you have done for PSU-AAUP and PSU.
In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to the James R. Nattinger Fund which supports graduate students in Applied Linguistics; Tucker’s dream was to see this fund grow large enough to provide a full tuition remission. Donations can also be made to the Sherbro Foundation, a non-profit founded by a former Peace Corps Volunteer, which follows the Peace Corps model of empowering grassroots organizations on community-led developments, focusing on girls' education and economic development.
