On Wednesday, January 27th from noon-1pm we hosted a presentation "What is Academic Freedom and How Does It Differ from Free Speech." Hans-Joerg Tiede, Director of Research for the AAUP, clarified how the AAUP has defined academic freedom and its differences from free speech. After a half-hour talk, the floor was opened for Q&A and audience discussion.Thoughtful questions were asked about whether academic professionals have academic freedom, whether guidelines need to be developed for the use of social media, and whether the AAUP as an organization is considering how to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into its understanding of academic freedom. Thanks to everyone who came!
