On October 5, 2018, our American Association of University Professors (AAUP) Executive Council released a statement about the killing of Jason Washington and the movement to disarm PSU. As a follow-up to our commitment to campus solidarity, AAUP Executive Council invited members to attend the #DisarmPSU Solidarity Teach-In on October 23, 2018. AAUP Executive Council also invited members to participate in one of the nine listening forums on campus safety and security, organized by Margolis Healy, an independent security consulting firm PSU has hired to review campus safety, held October 3-November 1.
Numerous faculty, staff, students, and community members participated in the Teach-In. Presentation topics included a history of police shootings in Portland, how racial stereotypes affect use of police force, policing in the context of feminist anti-violence, and student protest case studies. The teach-in also included opportunities for caucusing, singing, art, and watching a clip from the Documentary “Arresting Power: Resisting Police Violence in Portland.”
Stay tuned for more ways to participate in discussions about safety and security on campus.
