President Trump on Wednesday asked Jeff Sessions, the U.S. attorney general, to resign. The move sparked immediate speculation about the status of the investigation by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, which is overseen by the Department of Justice. (Sessions had recused himself from overseeing the investigation, for which he was publicly criticized by Trump.)
But for those in higher education, the ouster had other significance: Sessions has been the Trump administration’s foremost critic of higher education.
