Denial of AP Appeals

February 01, 2022 / PSU-AAUP

We know that many of you are finally hearing back regarding the final stage of appeal decisions for the AP Classification process. So far, we’ve only heard from some of our members that their appeals have been denied without explanation. We know this process has been exhausting, that the administration has consistently failed to listen to Academic Professionals and truly recognize the complexity and importance of our work. On top of that, they have failed to meet the deadlines for notification as outlined in our contract – dragging out this morale destroying process even further and they have neglected to give us any explanation as to why appeals were denied. Their continued failures is one of the reasons they offered the .8% pay increase to all APs (see above). While it's something, it is eons away from being enough.

In the last two years, over 80 APs have left our university, taking with them extraordinary talent and knowledge, yet admin still seems to think we are replaceable and expendable. Furthermore, this has increased AP workload in the areas that are left with vacant positions. APs are often in their roles because they find meaning and purpose through public service, supporting students, and supporting academic efforts, because we believe in accessible, public higher education. We are consistently exploited, overworked, and underpaid for valuing meaningful work. The care and thoughtfulness we show for our work, our students, and our colleagues is not reciprocated by administration.

Our union has brought these issues up multiple times during meetings with management, and we will continue to do so until our members are compensated equitably, valued, and not seen as an afterthought. Please check upcoming member news for more information as we continue to advocate for APs.
