National Higher Ed day of action - April 17

April 15, 2025 / PSU-AAUP

Many of us are deeply concerned about the revocation of student visas at Portland State and the impacts on accessibility and equity which should be fundamental to the classroom. See the letter PSU-AAUP’s Vice President for Grievances and Academic Freedom sent the Cudd administration here. Additionally, it’s been almost six weeks since every on-campus union asked President Cudd for measures to be taken to defend students and all campus community members from exactly these sorts of attacks. We have received no response from the Cudd administration to these letters even as the waves of student visa revocations rippled outward from Columbia.

What happens next depends on all of us. Use these questions from AAUP national to advocate to the Cudd administration to robustly defend our students, faculty, and staff. Use this FAQ created in collaboration with the Dreamer Resource Center to help coworkers, students, and PSU community members know their rights. Join us for the below slate of teach-ins, rallies, and calls.

Call to demand Alfredo "Lelo" Juarez, a Farmworker Union Leader, be released
On March 26, Alfredo “Lelo” Juarez was violently kidnapped by ICE who broke his car window when Lelo tried to exercise his rights. As one of the initial founders of Familias Unidas por la Justicia (FUJ), an independent union, Lelo helped agricultural workers win paid breaks and overtime and on educating the community and legislators about the exploitative H-2A program. In solidarity, the Coalition of Independent Unions has called on unions in the area to bring awareness to Lelo’s detention and make calls to demand his release.

Hands Off Workers! Rally
The Trump administration has issued an executive order stripping collective bargaining and union rights from workers across the federal government. As Labor Notes writes, this move affects “700,000 to 1 million federal workers, including at the Veterans Administration and the Departments of Defense, Energy, State, Interior, Justice, Treasury, Health and Human Services, and even Agriculture.”

As we say in the labor movement, an injury to one is an injury to all. Previous rallies drew between 2 and 5 million nationally. Join Oregon AFL-CIO and more in telling Trump and Musk Hands Off Our Unions and Our Services!

Sat. May 3, at Noon
