Unionized Federal workers are organizing informational pickets nationally today, Wednesday, July 30th, in response to the Trump administration and ICE targeting their coworkers in their workplaces for unwarranted arrests. In addition to feeling distressed and traumatized by these arrests and detainments, these unwarranted attacks on immigrants have left many federal workers feeling unsafe in their workplaces.
All of this comes in a context where locally, 23 international students were targeted by the federal officials, including the revocation of visas of at least two PSU students. Additionally, just north of us, farmworker and independent union leader Alfredo 'Lelo' Juarez Zeferino was detained and ultimately chose to self-deport due to declining health from the conditions in the 1,500-person Tacoma, Washington, ICE facility. Nationally, SEIU United Service Workers West president, David Huerta, was subjected to a violent ICE arrest, which put him in the hospital, and record numbers of grad workers like Rümeysa Öztürk and international students like Mahmoud Khalil have been detained.
Show your solidarity with federal workers, students, and our community in Terry Schrunk Plaza today at 4:30pm in your PSU-AAUP t-shirt and hang this attached flyer on your office door to help protect students, faculty, and staff from Federal overreach.
