As Councilor Candace Avalos writes:
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing contract negotiations between Portland State University and the members of the PSU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (PSU-AAUP). As a member of Portland’s City Council, an advocate for fair labor practices, and a former PSU employee and PSU-AAUP member for eight years, I understand the vital role that faculty and staff play in fostering an equitable and thriving academic community.
Having worked at PSU and been part of PSU-AAUP, I have seen firsthand the dedication of faculty and staff who go above and beyond to serve students and advance the university’s mission. These individuals are the backbone of PSU’s success, and their contributions should be met with fair treatment, job security, and competitive wages. I strongly urge the administration to take meaningful steps toward settling a fair contract and reversing planned layoffs.
I stand in solidarity with PSU-AAUP in their efforts to protect against layoffs, ensure fair wages, and uphold the values of equity and inclusion that PSU champions. I encourage the administration to negotiate in good faith and prioritize the long-term sustainability of the university by investing in its people. PSU’s strength lies in the faculty, staff, and students who make it a beacon of opportunity and innovation.

Portland State University
Dear PSU Administrators,
I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the ongoing contract negotiations between Portland State University and the members of the PSU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (PSU-AAUP).
Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I am ready to discuss how we can support PSU in fostering an equitable and sustainable future for all.
Sincerely,
Councilor Candace Avalos
