MEMBER OPPORTUNITIES, BARGAINING

Board of Trustees speakout tomorrow 6/6

June 05, 2025 / PSU-AAUP

Bilingual pay pushback

We've received a concerning number of reports of members experiencing pushback to accessing the bilingual pay that we won in our contract days before the second-ever strike vote in Portland State History. This new piece of our contract is something virtually every other public sector employer in Portland pays and part of why academic professionals leave their PSU jobs in under three years on average. If PSU is to have a just transition to being an HSI and AANAPISI serving institution, it is imperative administration makes this compensation for racialized labor accessible to all academic professionals whose job descriptions list bilingual fluency as a “preferred qualification.” Following Administrators putting up procedural hurdles for qualified members to access bilingual pay, PSU-AAUP leaders brought this issue to administration in our monthly Labor Management Committee. We’re asking members to attend this Friday’s Board of Trustees meeting in PSU-AAUP red to support members who are there speaking out about bilingual pay and other issues.

Help defend what we won in our contract by RSVPing below and inviting your students and coworkers to do the same.

A better Board of Trustees so we can dream bigger dreams

From the IELP layoffs, to the looming 17 NTTF layoffs, to a faculty senate vote of no confidence, to this new fight to enforce a contract that’s already been won, it’s clear we need a Board of Trustees that wants to create quality teaching and learning conditions, not cut to the bone. Already, over 5,000 letters have been sent to Governor Kotek and the Board of Trustees to replace Sheryl Manning with former PSU-AAUP President Mary King. So many have been sent that Governor Kotek’s staff met with Karlyn Adams-Wiggins, PSU-AAUP Vice-President for Legislative and Political Action to discuss Mary King’s Board of Trustees candidacy. That said, we have 25 days until Governor Kotek’s decision which will shape the next four years of the Board of Trustees.
Email Governor Kotek to appoint Mary King
and recruit coworkers and students to do the same
