Austerity and Its Alternatives: Oregon’s State Budget

January 09, 2026 / PSU-AAUP

Hosted by The Center for Urban Studies (CUS) at Portland State University

Last September, Gov Tina Kotek directed Oregon’s state agencies to prepare for budget cuts of up to 5%, in response to lost tax revenue stemming from changes to the federal tax code. These program cuts would affect public education, healthcare, food programs, and more. But is public austerity the only response possible? What alternatives exist to preserve the much-needed services that are paid for by tax revenue collected at the state and federal levels?

Join us for a lively discussion with Dr. Mary King, Emerita Professor of Economics at Portland State University, and Daniel Hauser, Deputy Director of the Oregon Center for Public Policy in which we learn about the history of Oregon’s tax policies and how long-standing austerity measures and reluctance to raise revenue hamstring Oregon’s ability to provide the programs and services Oregonians need. Learn about potential changes to the tax code in the upcoming 2026 short legislative session, including the option to “disconnect” parts of the tax code from replicating the tax cuts put in place by H.R.1.

Following the talk, there will be Q&A and group discussion to consider longer-term strategies to address raising revenue at the state level.
